“Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good. . . “ Genesis 50:20
I’ve been working on a sermon about Joseph for this Sunday, and this line keeps jumping out at me. Joseph spoke these words to his brothers when they came to beg forgiveness for selling him off to a slave trader. After all Joseph had suffered, he was still able to see God at work in the midst of it all and to freely offer forgiveness to his brothers. This is grace in action, and is a reminder to us that God can take even the worst things that happen to us and bring forth something good. This is very different, in my opinion, from saying that God CAUSES those bad things to happen – but God never leaves us on our own in the midst of our troubles, just as God never left Joseph.
