Did You Know? The Stonewall Riots were not the first documented instances of uprising in US history? In 1924, German immigrant Henry Gerber founded the Society of Human Rights in Chicago Illinois. This was the first group to campaign for gay rights in the United States. In 1955, the Daughters of Bilitis was announce in San Francisco and was the first lesbian rights group in the U.S. In the 1960s, the Mattachine Society would hold “Annual Reminders” at Philadelphia’s Independence Hall every 4th of July, where they’d advocate for lesbian and gay equality.
